Default Broken exhaust pipe support

OK, how might this have happened. I have a 96 FLSTC with duals (one pipe down each side). Went for a ride today and noticed a rattle/banging from under the bike. Look and find that heafty piece of chrome steel that keeps the aft end of the tail pipe steady is broken just forward of the forward bolt hole. Now that is one big piece of steel to have broken by work hardening. Is that possible? Anyone have any luck welding it together or do I need a whole new one. Not fussy about needing chrome under the bike.

Thanks in advance
John

I had the muffler support on my flst break about 15 years ago. But the bike is not duals. I kept hearing a loud click every now and then while riding...when cleaning the bike I found that the bar cracked in two...it was part 65459-84. I just ordered a new one instead of having it welded. This support bolts to the frame.

John,

That is a surprise! Beggars belief it could break, but more likely to be a flaw in the thing rather than 'stress' I would guess. I suggest a new one would be better than welding it.

Never saw one break myself, usually the chrome will wear off and they squeek unless you keep them lubed. They're nothing more than a chromed piece of heavy, shallow channel but I'd vote for an OEM replacement. Part# 65723-85

I've seen them break over the years. The usual cause is the exhaust is installed with tension on that bracket. Sometimes overloading the saddlebag on that side will speed up the process. Replace it with the new "C" model

Default Broken muffler bracket

Well, I called the local Harley dealer, seems my description of the exhaust system appeared to be aftermarket and of unknown make did not register. After he looked up the part for a stock FLSTC, he seem at a loss as to why my description and the part he had was no where near the same as the part he had in his hand. After the third explaination he finally said, this must not be a stock exhaust. For $10 I had it welded.
