Andrews EV-46 and milled heads
Hi everyone.
Finally I have all the parts to assembly the engine, and my heads had been ported and ready to send to the mill shop.
I know is a proven combo, but I want to check just in case, is it safe to mill 0,04" from the heads with the 0.03" cometic head gaskets and this cam?
Do I have enough valve/piston clearence with the stock pistons?
Also, how much you think this will raise my CR?

You will be OK with .040 mill and .030 headgaskets, many take alot more off to get to 9.5-1 compression. You should be around the 9.00-1 range without knowing the measured head cc's.
If I remember, the stock pistons have reliefs on the intake sides but the Andrews EV46 .495 lift is still moderate and a safe cam.

I thought that my CR would be around 9.5:1 with the thinner gasket and the 0.04" milled, do you think I should mill more?
I know is light bike (FXD), and I do mostly highway run`s but I don`t want to loose too much power of the line having a cam so big, my best buddy has a 98 Sportster 1200 and I don`t want to get embarrassed when we test each other off the line :-)

I milled .070" and run an EV-51 (.510" lift) and have no piston to valve clearance issues. My stock pistons do have valve reliefs tho. Static compression was calculated at just under 10:1 with .070" mill and .030" gasket, basic EVO compression calculation is about half point compression for every .030" which would put .055" (.040"+.015" thinner gasket) at 9.3-9.4:1 from stock 8.5:1. Take .050" off plus the thinner gasket for a solid 9.5-9.6:1 static. Calculated dynamic compression with that particular cam duration/lift is a better way to determine how much to mill tho anyways.

Yup, did a full port/polish/valvegrind and so on too so she packs it pretty good. Not a huge difference under about 2800 RPM in seat of the pants pull (although torque was increased substantially as well and it'll pull any hill at any RPM even fully loaded) but when you get on that cam at about 2800-3000RPM its a completely different beast.
It never fails to impress me for bang-for-buck, I spent under a grand (stage 1 stuff was already done and headwork performed by a close friend/bikebuilder as labor exchange for my automotive expertise) and between 3000-6000RPM you better be ready for it and hang the hell on! Still need to dyno it but I've seen an identical set up run 93hp/100tq on a Dynojet dyno so I'm guessing it to be in that ballpark +/-5 or 10hp for tune/individual motor variances. So far has embarassed any twincam thats lacking headwork, of any cubic inch. In fact the only twinkie to take me so far had a 95" kit, good cams, high compression pistons and Branch heads etc, in a Dyna. And he spent a LOT more than I did

I can`t wait to test my bike with the new mod`s!!
Did you change ignition too or you still have de stock 5000RPM cut? I was wondering if the cam I choose would be a little too big for the stock ignition, but I guess that if you feel the power from 3000RPM the EV-46 would kick in at lower RPM.
I just can`t decide if my next investment should be a free flowing air intake or an ignition system.

99 FXST. Ignition is stock 5250 RPM cutoff til next paycheck, she's still pullin like a raped ape when it hits the limiter so gonna put on a Dyna 2000 and set it for 6000 street use and maybe 6500 for racing. Would have top see if its still pullin hard at 6 or not. It's supposed to be a 2800-6500RPM cam. Cant remember specs for the EV-46 and dont feel like lookinit up but I think its like 2500-6000 RPM. If you dont have a high flow air cleaner and pipes do them before worrying about your Rev limit. What year is your bike? The later P curve ignitions are actually a good advance curve just too low a rev limit for a bigger cam and headwork (and of course better pipes and air cleaner, then eventually carb and/or carb kit).

Mine is a 98 FXD, the pipes are a pair of custom made 2-1 but the air box is still the stock one.
I guess that with the next paycheck I`ll be buying an S&S teardrop cover with a K&N filter.
Let me know how do you like the Dyna system, might be the following item in my neverending list of mods.
