Hello everybody, my name is Matias, I`m from Argentina.
I`ve been reading the forum for a long time, but haven`t introduced myself.
Two years ago I purchased a 1998 FXD, three weeks ago, going to a rally my exhaust cracked 5 inches from the cylinder head, and the exhaust valve get bent.
Really sucked, but it`s the perfect opportunity to get a full custom exhaust and a headwork.
The pictures are with the new exhaust. I will paint the exhaust and the engine with harley black paint.
How much do you recommend to safely shave de heads? remember that for know, the engine will be with everything stock, including cam.
I wll put a new set of piston rings only.

There are different head gasket thickness avaliable, but with a stock Harley which is .040, it would yield about 9:1 compression ratio. There are some other members who may be able to give you more specific, and better info on all that.
The Police Bikes had the same carb and ignition. They were possibly jetted differently with a different needle in the carb. That would difficult to research, I've never tried. The cams were the "L" grind which is .495 lift rather than the .472 that they all had after 1992. And they were all fuel injected after 1996.

You should be safe with .050, however you will need adjustable pushrods just to be safe. This would also be a good time to get a three angle valve job, new seals, and have the ports and valve pockets "cleaned up" a bit. Go to nightrider.com, there is a lot of great info there on evo's. Try to find any book ( there are three of them) written by D. Willian Denish on V-Twins the are probably the definitive book on V-Twin performance
