Default gas cap not venting...

noticed the other day a small amount of gas was leaking out of the carb at the gas station, as I twisted the gas cap off I heard a hiss. could this be the culprit to the leaking? I just rebuilt the carb and it works fine. this also got me to thinking that if the cap is not venting than that would explain lately when I twisted the throttle hard during acceleration that it acted as if it were flooded for a split second then the bike took off. that would mean the cap thats not venting (rightside tank) is causing the engine to be flooded and causing this leak? am I right?

It doesn't vent through the gas cap....it acually vents through a small VAPOR ORIFICE Type 2 directly off the fuel tank. Overfilling the tank will clog the canister rather quickly, once it gets clogged.....that's it. You either have to replace or bypass it. I've just bypassed mine.

I don't have the exact part-number, but Bikerbandit has 1666765-001.

I had a venting problem with a new HD cap similar to what you described. Almost acted like it was vapor locked and not getting fuel at speed. Seems as though the cap wasn't venting, or the crossover was collapsing. On the advice of a friend, I held the check ball in the cap with a small screwdriver and drilled a hole through the check ball. Problem solved.

its and older model than yours so it vents through the cap.

My 93 has a new HD cap that's vented. It's an FXLR and has a single cap tank. There is a plastic ball in the center of the cap that apparently is supposed to relieve the pressure. Not exactly sure how your cap is vented, just passing along how drilling a hole in that plastic ball solved the problem on mine.
