Default broke down

well i was out riding my 85 FLHTC when i shifted gears.....sounded like it went into neutral or in between gears...so i shifted again and was fine...about another mile it felt like it popped outta gear and went in between or back to neutral...as i coasted to the side of the road i could hear what i thought sounded like my primary chain spinning...got the bike home and remover the cover...primary chain is good as well as the tensioner...i put the bike on a lift and found that no matter what gear im in i can freely spin the back wheel and the primary chain does not move...i have no gears...anybody have any idea what it could be?...thanks in advance

Look closely at the two row sprocket on the backside of your clutch basket. This is what the primary chain drives, the bike also might be hard to start as this is what turns the motor over via the primary chain when the starter turns the clutch basket.

When you have the bike in gear and turn the tire the clutch basket should turn, try to look behind the clutch where the primary chain rides on its sprocket. Everything should turn together. As for the hard to start it will sound like the starter is turning but not the motor.
The only other thing it might be is if your clutch hub key is spun or the hub has broke. If you need pics I have a hub and basket I can get some pics of and point out the parts.

On some bikes, that clutch hub nut is left hand thread. Confirm this before you try to crack it loose!
