Default Oil pump drive gear

Quick question for the masses... How much play should there be in the drive gear? Should it be shimmed or allowed to slide on the shaft? Mine moves about .030"..

Thanks,

Thanks,
I forget your year model but that's fine on the play. Some drive gears on the pinion will slide nearly 1/4" and I never measured, but there's plently of slide on the oil pump drive shaft gear also, .030 sounds about right.

Thats funny..... My first post said 1/4", since I thought it was a good amount.. Then I went out and really looked at it and noticed its only about .030".. When I move it, I can make it "tick"... So, just wanted to be sure.. Pinion runout was only .003", so my next task is to figure out how to check the cam gear fitment you mentioned.. Going good since I got that damn bearing out.. It was a Torrington, but it came appart, even with my puller.. Shoulda heard the words coming out of my mouth at the time.......

Thanks Rufus..

yep - all that sounds just like it usually is

You'd need either .105 or .108 pins depending on the year model but you can cheat it either way with the wrong sizes but the pinion is so darn hard to measure correctly anyway cause it's only got 21 teeth. And you'll need a 2" mic graduated in .0001

OK, so, since we're on the topic.... I've got a "green" gear in it.. Funny that the book claims a "loose" gear will cause a "lifter like tick" and a tight one will whine... So, how do I check it?? The book just says "a ticking gear can be replaced with the next size gear".... If I knew that was it, I'd be all over it..... But............................
