im thinking, and i could be wrong, but it might have something to do with how long the battery has been on the shelf. say i go in and buy a battery thats been sitting there for 1 or 2 years, well its already 2 years old. although i thought the battery companies were suppose to cycle there batteries every so often.

If you want to buy an HD/Deka battery - here's a link with the part numbers. I just bought one off ebay and saved 30% or so over HD's prices.

I have found that the HD AGM battery gives me the longest life, 3-4 years, and is a direct drop in replacement, unlike a lot of aftermarket batteries.

I always hook up my battery tender if the bike sits for a over couple of weeks.

Also, the "official Harley battery" is a Harley battery from Harley.

My .02 worth

OK guys listen up here...this is important. The dealer tells you batteries last around 2-years and you should replace it every two years or you bike will simply explode. I got a hunch there are a lot of "dealer buddies" riding around out there that never have to buy a battery....they just get the good 2-year old ones that were removed from your bike.

Treat one right and you can get 4-5 years and even more out of these sealed units. I strapped a Wally-World lawn mower battery on a friends one time out in the midst of nowhere. When he had finished the trip and got a replacement battery, he took the Wally battery back and got a refund!

So True, So true! Got one going on 12 or 9 years since I bought it used in 2000, a '97, still shows 12.6v without a tender on. And a 1 1/2 year old battery in a bagger. The newer one is acting up, said made in CHINA.
