Two yrs. ago I had a inner cam bearing fail on a 97 RK. But I caught it when I
change the oil. I have read they will whine as the get worse? Mine failed at
about 30 or 32K miles. Probley not it, but change your oil will tell you for sure.
Good luck...........Tenn.Vol.

Mine was whining heavily at 51,000. It was the inner cam bearing. (INA). I was lucky and pulled it before it went through the bottom end and oil pump. The cam was ruined. (96 FLHTCU-I)

Mine was whining at around 34,000 and was the inner cam bearing. I took a stethascope with the metal rod in it and put the rod against the nose cone of the engine and could hear metal to metal noise. When I pulled it apart it had ruined the cam as well.

Yes, stock cam. Cam case had never been opened since new. (Replaced with new stock cam and Torrington bearing.)

Anyone who has not changed out that INA bearing, do it. A buddy of mine lost a complete engine due to that bearing failing. It is cheap insurance.

There was NO doubt about it, large slivers of metal. You could pour off
the old oil and the bottom kof the pan was coated with HEAVY metal. My
friends dad had his own plane and he had a tool that cut opened the filter.
When we opened up the K&N there was not as much silver flakes caught by
the filter, but it would glissen when held in the sun. I assume that the heavy
particals would settle to the bottom of hte pan and only the small particals
would be circulated..When the bearing was pulled it had worn about half way
thru the rolled end of the bearing that would keep the roller encased, and 3 or
4 of the rollers were ground away.
I bought the 97 about 5 or 6 yrs. ago and it had been purhased new by mech
that worked at Bayside HD in Portsmouth, Va. And he had sold it to the person
that I bought it from. I went back to the dealer and they searched the mech.
record and he had bought A inner cam bearing. Had he bought it for the 97 RK
or for ????? I rolled the dice and hoped that it was for HIS now MY RK.

As far as I know it was the original POS harley bearing. I replaced the camwith
the Andrews 23. It was a noticable differance in low end torq. The way I
best described it was like it added another gear between the gears.... Tenn.
