$3k quote from the Indy

Have him give you an itemized list;for $3 K, he should.
FYI;
New Cam; $160
Cam bearing $10
Lifters $125
Head Job $500, on the spendy side, but should include milling too, which you would want
Redo cylinders $100 ea.
New Pistons $250
Adjustable Pushrods $100
New Gasket set $100
Dyno Job $150
More or less; $1500, low end ;just say $1650, high end to be on the safe side.
Now, you have to say how much for labor?
Most indys charge $50-60 and hour. You should ask him how to estimate how many hours he will have in it, for that price @$60 per hour that would be 23, or 24 hours?
Dealerships charge $75 and up.
My local charges $85.
I know good indys that charge $45 per hour.

Just for the hell of it, I took a look at the itemized parts on the receipt for my top end work. The parts came to a little over $1900, but that included some other stuff including two new tires, a new belt, a Fullsac true dual conversion kit and some miscellaneous stuff - clutch cable etc. So my memory of the $3000 price tag is correct, but I was forgetting that it included a lot more that just the cam and top end job.

Dozer's Cycles on Crooks Rd in Troy. I'll probably see what VooDoo will charge to do it as well, at least the head and port work. Cam and Cam bearing I think will be a job I will just tackle.
You guys are awesome, thank you all for breaking down what and what cost of things you got. It gives me a much better idea as they're just arent a ton of Indy's around my area.

There are a couple good indys up by me but you would have to drive hour and 1/2 north to the Tri-City area.
Good luck, post up what you end up doing with the build.

After having a local HD in MD rebuild my 80" 96 EFI last Fall; lost the cam bearing and it went thru the engine, I don't think I EVER will have a dealer or anyone rebuild an engine that does not offer more than 30 days warranty.
I just to have the MoCo reman the rascal, back to '99 specs, which is what I had wanted mostly; original numbers, original parts.
We will see how long that one lasts.
