Can anyone tell me the symtoms of a bad starter jackshaft? When i tried to start the bike with the old starter it "whirrs" like the pinion was not engaging. Would start the bike eventually but had to either hold the starter button or keep bumping the starter button until it would catch and go. I just put another good starter in and it does the same thing. I have the primary cover off and did notice though the pinion is engaging with the ring gear but still does the "whirr" thing. Had the battery tested and they said it was good. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
The problem exists with 2 starters, the only common part being the jackshaft...
I suggest you take a look at the splines at the back of the jackshaft, and also inside the coupler.

I second Dans motion. If you have completely replaced the entire unit it is not likely you have two bad overrunning clutches. You should be able to see some damage or something on the parts you swapped from the old to the new.
