No tach here. I go by ear, feel, sound ,instinct, listen to engine, seat of pants, After 50 years in the saddle. I shift when it feels like I think it needs to be shifted.. I am not a racer. To each their own.

On occasion to rev limiter but I really don't like shifting later than 5800 RPM.. don't think there's much power after that..

I ran mine all the way up to the rev limiter which shut me down. Some clown wanted to get around me. I wanted to see how bad he wanted it. Turns out about 90 mph on a fairly stock FI Road king.

I can tell you that running at hi RPMs (below 5K) will not hurt the engine. I've had her hit the 5200 a few times in 5th gear (autobahn /autostrada) 2 up and loaded... usually ride at a little above 4K RPMs.. This is with my '87 FXSTC with a 70 tooth rear pulley. At redline its at about 120MPH. My '93 Tour glide won't redline in 5th, but i can keep her at around 95 forever.... or until I run out of gas!! The TG has 55K miles (almost new!) My softail has almost 200K miles (this is NOT a joke) and is still in perfect shape.... engine wise.
