I wouldn't replace the FLHS style stock swingarm silicone cleveblocks What I've read was the rear end swaying problems was due to the design of the fairings on the FLHT The FLHS with the roadking style windshield didn't have that problem !

I have a Road King and have to dis-agree.

There is some SERIOUS frame flex if you lay on the throttle when you are in a turn!

I doubt the fairing would be an issue when your pulling away from a stoplight and hanging a left under power!

I can deal with it but it bothers my wife a bunch!!

This way you can remove the caliper to clean it out without removing the axle (Brembo uses a 2 piece). Just a thought. BTW, you need a rear 300 mm rotor (2008 ~ Current)
Hi Howard,

The swingarm I bought comes complete with 1 inch wheel spindle, brake calliper and mounting, plus belt guard. The wheel comes complete with pulley and brake rotor. I will continue to use my existing belt, so will swap my 'old' pulley onto the new wheel (the other Brit I mentioned has done that). I intend using the new disc and calliper, and hope they work with my existing master cylinder (I fitted a new one not long ago).

I am with you there, they have already gone! I have a True-Track Trackula kit on the bike, which has transformed it. I am hoping to modify the TT bronze swingarm bushes to fit the new swingarm. If that does not prove possible then I will be asking Howard for a set of his Delran bushes.

I have owned my bike from new. I found the RK style windshield to cause handling problems, which is why I now have a batwing. It made the handlebars rock from side to side. Avon tyres pretty well cured it, but the bike is far better with the batwing.

If you have read this far and wondered what happened next, I have covered installing the later swingarm, plus sorting out the various problems I hit, in my Suspension Thump thread.

My sig pic is of the bike, fully modified, taking a rest in France on its way home from a 2,500 mile return trip to Poland from the UK. If the bike looks dirty, its because the weather was foul and the weak sun in the photo was our first in a fortnight!

Yes, still reading your progress. I'm getting ready to rebuild the '84 FLTC this winter and find your info interesting. thanks for posting it. Looking forward to going back in time and ditching the EFI '05 Ultra.

Thumbs up Evo Dressser Swingarm Upgrade

Sorry guys, you are losing me with all this S/Arm talk. I dont "hang about" when riding my old 91 Ultra and although I have very little(2 years) experience with my Harley I havent really noticed any great probs. with handling . I strippped the S.Arm down last year and found that the original set up(CleveBlocs etc.) were in a terrible condition. As I was low in funds I decided to put everything back together until I could afford the "modern" upgrades. Unfortunately my funds got worse and I ended up buying an original S.Arm,in great condition inc.CleveBlocks etc., etc. for £40.00 ($60.00.) on eBay. I intend to fit it this winter and hopefully it will do the trick.
Great thing about this site is....everyone has their own ideas & opinions about what is right & wrong and generally loads of respect for each others opinions.
I have to say .....without this evo site and the great advice I have had from different members and the Evo Forum,I dont think I would still be riding the old Ultra.
Keep up the good work its much appreciated. Bungo

Bungo,

I've owned my 1990 FLHS from new. Solo it was great. 2-up, especially fully loaded on that annual grand tour, it would always bottom out on bumps and thumps. Nothing I did to the darned thing would stop it! Follow the link in #15 above.

I resolved to do something about it by replacing the flimsy original swingarm with the much stronger later one, as the foundation for a pair of Ohlins rear shocks. I also have a True-Track Trackula handling kit to tighten up the handling.

I now have a bike that has yet to bottom out when we are not hanging about and rides so much better than before that it seems like another bike.

the '05 has been laid down and is in need of major repair. Not really sure parting it out is the answer.....but I could reuse the tranny in the '84 and get rid of that enclosed chain final drive. hmmmm? you might be on to something here
