I like to go over and gig them on most all mileage threads. "Man, I'm only getting 33"... and I chime in, "Geesh, I get at least 50 mpg in town or on the highway. Last time I checked I got 53 mpg.

I like the new motors but I like my 1998 Roadglide best out of a dozen H-D's I've owned (in the past 35 years).

53....That's good!
The last few times I checked I'm only getting 51 mpg,
at 70 mph, on the freeway!
Probably only 51 because of the performance upgrades....

Yea, I think its a trip too... My buddy is always complaining about his '99 needing fuel at 150mi... I usually get 200 before reserve.. On the highway at 80+, I average 48mpg with many more mods and more hp and tq than his Twinki.. Progress, gotta love it..

I have wondered, if FI is supposed to be about efficiency and lowering pollutants it would make sense that it would make for less fuel per mile driven. My carbed bike burns less fuel per mile at the same speed, and in my mind, that means less pollutants, less cost, better for the environment...

Simple math, because I have a simple mind!

(Hope the gas company hitman doesn't come knocking now)

Kinda... On the automotive front, any gains in fuel economy by EFI are typically consumed by the a/c (many people didnt have in the 60's and 70's), extra load of the generator running our electrical necessities and higher average driving speeds in some cases.. The problem with HD FI, its a very primative system that uses very little feedback (MAF & O2s). They're simply guessing on fuel demand based on throttle and manifold pressure.. Believe it or not, the carb probably performs better because its actually pulling the fuel it needs by way of engine vaccuum.. So, their current EFI is generally no better than a carburetor, other than cold start and elevation strategies.. I expect it to get better in the future, but the air cooled engine needs to be rich to survive.. As hard as it is for me to believe (being a very strong believer in EFI), I love my carbureted bike..

Since you raise it.....

FI should give us better fuel consumption IMHO, because it can be mapped to provide uniform air/fuel mixture throughout the rev range. But with early FI BMWs, for example, their twins were much less economical than their fours, which doesn't quite make sense to me.
