Evo Touring Clutch Cable Tip
I did a search, and didn't see this come up before, so if it's a repost, I apologize.
I recently had the top ring of the clutch cable on my '97 Road King snap as I was attempting to shift into 3rd gear....while getting on the expresssway. Thankfully, the next exit provided a yield sign and a right hand curve and I was able to make it 5 miles back to the girlfriend's apartment without the need to stop the bike.
ANYWAY.....
I needed a clutch cable, and I'm not in the market for a braided one yet, so I just called up the local HD dealership and told them I needed a cable. They said the part fits 89-99 Touring bikes, was $63 and they would have to order it. the other 4 dealers in the area had the same story. So I did some research and bought a clutch cable for 00-06 Touring bikes, and what do you know....it's the same thing. The only difference that I noticed at all was that it had a heat/rub sheathing on it where it rides under the engine up to the clutch release cover. It was in stock, and to top it all off, it was only $32. I notice that Harley also mentions a nylon inner lining in the newer cable. I'm not sure if the older cables had it, but I can say that the clutch has NEVER been easier to pull in the short time that I've had it.
So the short story is; if you need a clutch cable for an '89-'99 Touring bike, save yourself $31 and buy the part for the '00-'06 bikes (part #38667-00), and don't worry about the fit as it fits exactly the same.
Hope this helps someone.
