I bought my EV 27 cam and lifters off of e-bay (new) and found a set of Comp Cams chromemoly push rods from another sight. Saved a bunch of $ and got great parts. Just my 2 cents.

The only thing I can add is (if it's not too late) I would use Cometic base gaskets. The James gasket for my rear cylinder is seeping; it only lasted a few thousand miles longer than the OEM. I think Cometic's stuff is state of the art at present.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread....but what is the "oil fix"? And why is everyone saying to reuse the old cam gear? The new cam comes with a gear on it. Just wondering.

+1 on Part Direct on the EV27 good prices and free shipping. Also got my Rush 2.25 mufflers cheap from them.

The old cam gear is already broken in with its mate. A new, unused gear will not necessarily mate as well and can be noisy. If the original gear is in good shape, lots of people prefer to use it.
The oil fix is a way to vent the crankcase so the oil isn't so pressurized where it doesn't need to be, thereby preventing some leaks.

If you were referring to the brand name "Hayden Oil Fix" it comes w/base gaskets & it's magic: is a nipple like tube that gets placed in the return hole of the motor case (F & R), only goes in 1/2 way, so the cylinder accepts the other half. This prevents oil from even getting near a base gasket, And really works well avoiding base leaks.

well now i have a real problem. pulled the cam cover off and the cam(bearing surface in case) was junk.. lifters so,so(some marks, scuffing) but,, i found where all the metal shavings are from,,,,,,the crank bearing can slide 1/4 in out of the case till it hits the retaining ring, the retaining ring is all ground down on the outside edge..like the crank is 1/4 to far out from the caes,. the ring is in the grove(like it should be) i think the ring is grinding on the oil pump grear(?) It IS grinding on something,, the oil pump drive is not worn or sloppy.the cam is(was) not hitting it. now wife thinks maybe time for a new bike!! Or get a new engine,,, im thinking el bruto, or ultima... ill update as i go.. thanks for all the help....

Sounds like the pinion bearing is worn out (if it actually slides in and out easily). Sprocket shaft bearing is probably well worn also.

Sprocket shaft bearing is 28.00. Pinion bearing 50.00 from HD about 20.00 if you know where. The pinion race is 55.00, unless it will "clean up" to an acceptable oversize. Downside - the tool to do that is 800.00 (yes, I have one) Cam 140.00 (+ or -), lifters 140.00, rod bearings with pin and lap the races about 300.00 (would be less except I don't have that tool dammit). Gaskets and seals 100.00. Another 50.00 on the heads if nothing out of specs there. Pistons, rings, wrist pin bushings 150.00 plus boring and honing about 200.00 (on the average)....

About 1200.00 in parts and machine shop charges for a like new engine. Unless your heads need seats and guides, but doubtful they be worn that much, Maybe exhaust guides...
