Default what do you think

well im looking at a set of harley evo cylinders and 10.1 SE pistons and rings. the cylinders have just been bored and the pistons and rings are new. guy wants $360.00 to my door. now my bike is a 1990 fxstc with some miles on it. couple thousand miles ago i had to remove the front barrel and helicoil one of the studs. at that time i checked the lower end and it felt tight. im just wondering if im rolling the dice by going up to 10 to 1 pistons over the stock flat tops. it just that the local shops here rape you on repairs, you know tell you one thing and do another, annd nothing is ever there fault. your really rolling the dice when you have work done here. now i do have a cam and super e carb and the bike makes enough power as is, just started somking a little and figure id keep my eyes open for any good deals. one day here they tell me boring my cylinders are $150.00 and the next day they dont know what im talking about. i just figured $360.00 for cylinders, pistons and rings sounds good. and each cylinder is honed to a per piston. looks and sounds like the machine shop that did the work knew what they were doing. the way i checkedthe botom end wa by pulling up on the rods and also moving them side to side, seemed tight.what do you think-engine-2jpg.jpg

The price doesn't sound out of line. I dunno what new cylinders and pistons go for from HD or if they even sell matched sets. You'll probably be fine on the bottom end. Get the valves/guides checked, a valve job with new seals and you should be good for another 75K. I personally am a believer in Hastings rings over HD, based on personal experience.

Default Cylinders

Got that picture posting figured out LOL? I guess I'm the "wet blanket" or devil's advocate by saying sounds TOO cheap. Are these remanufactured heads with OS pistons? Why is he selling and are they still in spec and undamaged? Do you have the performance valve train on the heads and will you have sufficient valve to piston clearance? I like the Evo's (my silver FLSTC is) but when I dynoed it at school, the top end was 5000-5500 vice the 6000 of the TC's and I thought it was gonna shake apart (58 HP@5500)! so I'm leery about adding too much performance to my own (TG for the XL) at least without a full rebuild/check of the bottom end: any extra power in the top will transmit to the bottom. Did you do a compression and leakdown test? It could be just a valve guide or rings which is a lot less $$$ to fix or can have your own remanufactured with the OS pistons for about same cost and at least know what you have. Just my H $.02: see ya round!

i agree it always better to fix what you have, because you know what you have.
