Anyone Use SAE 60 Weight Oil For EVO ? High Ambient Temps.
- hi.
- was wondering whether anyone here uses Harley's
SAE 60 weight oil in their EVOs ?
- my place here has very high ambient temps (afternoon
is like 36 deg. C , ie , approx 97 deg. F )
- according to HD's temp reference for their oil , SAE 60
is recommended for such ambient temps.
- anyone here with experience running the SAE60 weight
oil ?
thanks in advance.

- HD doesn't seem to say that 20w/40 or 50 or 60 , depends on
your TYPE of engine.
- what HD seems to say is that the weight of oil to be used is
determined by your ambient temps.
- hence my query.
.
- am experiencing a weakened exhaust note after long rides,
which is 'cured' by an oil change , but recurs after another
long ride. Am guessing that this is due to the oil "breaking down"
(not sure whether this is a correct term to use).
- thanks again.

97F isn't a high ambient temp. That's like a nice spring day in Texas. 107 starts to get a bit on the warm side. Even at that, I'd stick with 20W50 in an Evo and use an oil cooler with a thermostat. You could consider a 20W60 if you want, but I would not go to a straight 60W in an Evo, especially with the modern oils available.

I run 30w winter, 50w summer and ride all over - no problems, BUT I do take it real easy on a cold start regardless of the ambient. I Let the oil get up to at least 120 before I go over 2500 rpm.
I agree with the oil cooler setup, but use a thermostat or keep it covered, because oil doesn't work well (for many reasons) when it's under 140, especially at high rpm.
I doubt 60w would do much for you beyond what 50w would and 50w is a lot easier to find/pay for. last time I tried 20-50w, I had NO oil pressure below 1500 rpm so I personally won't comment any furtherabout that. And, neither will I engage in a debate about syn vs conv. nor will I put it in my engine. I do run HD semi-syn in the tranny, since that's all it's ever known.
Each piece of machinery has it's own personality and not unlike people, they have unique personalities and requirements.

- or am I going nuts ??

I probably could use SAE 50 or 60 these days, but will stay with the 20W50, although having a little more oil pressure at idle during in town stops for red lights and traffic jams ( as suggested by T150vej) does sound better.

You have to be careful to treat the patient and not just treat a number. Low pressure at idle isn't necessarily a bad thing. Factory spec is like 3lbs or better. Do you have at least that? Then don't worry about it.
pistole, I think you're hearing things. Just use quality oil and change it out per your book. You're probably only hearing the difference between a hot and cold motor.
