I could have afforded a TC, but decided to buy an Evo instead. Rebuilt it myself. Learned a lot since. Didn't regret my decision for a second!
When I decide to build something from scratch, it may even be a shovel (S&S most likely)

I picked up a 1981 FXE Shovel (picture on link below)last year for $6K. Tons of chrome, andews cam, fresh top end. I could not pass on it. With drag pipes, she has one BIG bark! I take to bike nights mainly but I have put 3000 miles on it already. I ride my street glide when touring. There are really some deals out there on old iron. I think the antiques are a little out of favor right now. I have seen nice evos for $6-$8K as well.

I picked up this 95 wide glide for 7k last december. It had 19k miles on it. I could have afforded a TC but decided to stay low budget. Best decision I could have made. I love the bike. My next bike will probably be an EVO bagger w/ low miles. I know they are still out here. Then I will have the best of both worlds.

A shovel is not an evo last time I looked.

A touring bike, which is basically the same frame as the FXR, would be a fine mount also. I would avoid the fuel-injected ones; the Mag-Morelli system is even worse than the current FI. I have a '92 FXRS myself and would never sell it. I see the current Twin Cams with the current six-speed and thank God I've got my Evo five-speed.
