RE: new carburetor
It depends a lot of what you like. I have the mikuni hsr42 and I must say that the difference between it and the OEM one is like night and day. My bike is now fast and have a great acceleration. I suppose that the S&S is another good option. Don't know so much about Edlebrock, but I think that anyone of this three would make your bike faster.

RE: new carburetor
I have a Wood Performance high flow CV style carb that works awesome and still gives me good fuel mileage. Some guys don't feela CV is a good carb and others are better. There are many opinions on the subject.
We rode the Black Hills 2 up on the backroads and my mileage on a stage 3 80" Evo was .1 MPG (45+) better than the kids on their TC 88 Stage 1.Great performance and good fuel economy - seems like the best of both worlds.

A stock cv will be an upgrade to your bike and make it run great (make sure it's tuned for your a/c and pipes). The Mikuni HSR 42 is a great carb and will add a little more but your mileage will suffer. CV = 40-45 mpg vs Mikuni 30-35 mpg (these are figures I have seen).
I would stay a way from the Quicksilvers, hard to tune I have heard.

I have an S&S E carb on mine, performance is excellent, 40-45 mpg unless you turn the wick a lot. I do have a good cam (Crane 316B) and run open drags. The S&S is simple, easy to tune(can change main jet on bike) and has an excellent easily tunable accellerator pump. I really like it a lot!

I agree with everyone. It's the best $150 you can spend. Right out of the box it runs great. I had to richen the pilot a little. HOwEVER, it is sensitive to temperature and altitude. I noticed an appreciable amout of spitting out the carb when I rode in 45-50 deg temps a frew weeks ago. I turned the airs screw in 1/2 turn to richen the mixture and haven't had any problems.

FWIW,
For my money, the S&S Super E is the only way to go. Easy to tune and adjust while on the bike. A friend has a Mikini 42 and loves it, howeverhe doesn't know how to tune it and I can't help him either. There is nothing wrong with a properly reworked CV either, as long as the rework is done by a reliable builder.
Like anything else, it's a matter of personal preference and you will get 100 opinions. I've been with S&S since the early B days in the 70's and will never go back. Just changed my main jet from a 70 to a 72 and the intermediate from a 29.5 to a 31. All my buddiessaid that those jets were too largethat the 70/29.5 werethe right jets. Guess what? After an accelerator pump adjustment the bike really liked the change and the performance in noticable.

Mikunis can be tuned for mileage- they come jetted too big for some bikes. Other than that, I've never heard a bad thing about them. They have info on their website about tuning. You can get the mileage kit from Fox Distributing.
