smoke from rear cylinder

smoke from rear cylinder
What would be the most logical thing to look at if I have a small amount of smoke coming out of the pipe from the rear cylinder? It does not do it at idle, only when I accelerate and then as the throttle is rolled off. I assume I need to have the top end rebuilt? Maybe some seepage by the rings? Any thought would be appreciated.

I am having the same problem with mine and I will be hving the cylinder walls honed and changing out the rings.
and the pistons.
and the ignition module.
and....
That's just a part of my winter mods, all YOU probably need to do is what's stated in the first line.

With no smoke at idle I doubt rings. I would start looking higher. Sounds more like worn valve guides. Have you cleaned the screen where the oil enters the lifters. Should be done yearly, and if it plugs up, the oil is not going to get to the top end, giving you problems. Just went thru this last summer in Sturgis with my buddies 97 ElectraGlide. Spent $600 on new lifters, blocks, push rods, etc., and did it rite in the campground. Didn't want to get into the top end there, and after all that he is smoking outta the front cylinder badly. Not that your's is the same problem, just something to check out.

RE: smoke from rear cylinder
Smoking when the throttle is closed is caused from really high vacume numbers in the intake circuit. Engine is reving faster than it should for the throttle position and normally causes no problems(decel) however the intake guide is exposed to this vacumeand if the seal is not up to it oil will be drawn down the stem and added to the incoming air charge for combustion. It will smoke until the oil is burnt up. Sometimes an engine will smoke on startup because oil has leaked down the stem and is sitting in the head waiting to be drawn in for combustion. Bad rings smoke under load or normal driving and it's constant. Usually the more the load, the more the smoke.
