Grinding/ clacking noise when hitting the starter.

More correctly, a weak battery can kill a starter clutch.

Start with a solenoid overhaul kit, bad solenoid connections can make that sound too and you can do it with the starter on the bike as it's a Dyna.

I would think that you'd get one click and no go if the contacts were bad. Maybe a groaning from the starter?

You can get a clatter as it flicks in and out in rapid succession, due to the contacts being burnt away.

Not only that but you will also get voltage drop across the contacts in that condition. A very simple repair..
