You can use your original primary covers with the newer splined trans mainshaft, if you use a clutch primary from 1990-1993 and you can use your original starter

@Dan89FLSTC You know I'm gonna sell the early wet clutch every time. It ticks off Marty and gives you and me 2 things to disagree about - clutches and used piston rings

Rufus, I had good luck with the early type diaphragm clutch on my `89, it went over 100,000 miles without a problem.

Marty does like the old type Shovelhead clutches, and Keihin butterfly carbs...

Biggest issue with taper clutch is that people "torque" the clutch nut up with a rattle gun and split the hub taper, then the key comes loose and then...armageddon...

50 foot pounds is plenty.

And many got cracked from over tightening ... while trying to remove them because they didn't

Who on earth reads manuals anyway lol! Reading the instructions is merely a last resort, once you have ****ed things up good and proper

You are between a rock and a hard place on this, because the late `84 was an oddball half year configuration.

Andrews does not make a replacement for this shaft (35042-84).

Two mainshaft part numbers were used in 1984, this is where is gets confusing...

The early `84 used a 35042-79 mainshaft (shovelhead type clutch, 5 speed, chain drive).

The late `84 used a 35042-84 mainshaft (diaphragm clutch, 5 speed, chain drive) this configuration was only used on late `84 bikes.

Be careful when looking for a replacement shaft, a lot of online vendors will show a -79 shaft as a replacement for late `84, but a -79 shaft is not compatible.

Put the old mainshaft on a pair of v blocks and measure the runout again...
