Finally got the bike on the lift and the front rocker cover off. All Black Gaskets and one fairly hard and curled up black umbrella valve.

im guessing when the PO converted it to a Road King and changed every part to chrome he tossed in. New gaskets and UVs.

what was a bit alarming was I was expecting far more oil up there. It had oil down in the crannies but nothing major.

yea or nay upsizing the oil return hole (the hole opposite side of the UV) ?

I've never had the need to enlarge the oil on the EVO engine. It was common practice on Twin Cams but I do not recall that being suggested for the EVO.

And don't fall for that piggy wiggly tail to help oil return into the case from the cylinder..

More data gathering and another few on the valve stem seals.

Is it worthwhile at this point to just pull the heads and replace the Valve Stem Seals? I’m doing a leak down test as well.

kinda one of them while I’m here, I’d hate to just do the umbrella valves find it still sucking oil and have to tear it all apart again.

See reply #7 in this post:

Did the enlargement of the hole on my bike while I had it apart. I figured "it can't hurt so why the hell not". I really don't see a down side.

how I’m siting tonight. Waiting on a friend to drop
off his leak down tester and going to use that to judge if the top ends coming off. Rear umbrella valve was still pliable vs the front. If Leak down passes then I need a way to test the valve stem seals. I can’t see them due to the dual valve springs.

Just snagged the 101 Performance Book off eBay. $20 shipped for the original vs $50 for the second edition. Bah. If anything it will make a good Loo Time Book. lol!

If you don't want to pull the heads off to change the valve seals, you can use the Nub tool to remove the keepers and valve springs and you can replace the seals.

Thanks Tommy, too bad it’s out of stock. That would save a ton of time of labor pulling the exhaust again and whatnot. Have to scour the interwebs see if a used one is out there.

Here, this will help. The Goodson tool is the same as the Nub tool.
