I picked up a '98 Heritage this winter and was changing oil this weekend. and the filter I pulled of appears to be a twin cam filter.
I compared the old one to the ones I ordered from Dennis Kirk and my twin cam filters I have on hand.
And the old one"s face looks like my twin cam filter as far as holes go , plus the new one from Kirk has a larger diameter

 

What is the question?

 

I thought the TC filters had a different thread pitch than EVO's

 

Nope, same threads and gasket. TC filter element is 5 micron and Evo is 20 microns. Flow rate and bypass setting is practically the same.

All the TC filters have an anti drain back valve (rubber covering the inlet holes on the inside) as do the longer Evo filters used on the front mount filter engines. The Standard length Evo filters - some have it, some don't depending on the manufacturer.

 

Question is whether to expect any problems.. I realize the damage is done. But just checking...it runs fine ..

 

It will be just fine.

 

No worries.

The smaller micron element requires more pressure to push oil thru it. Evos are filtered on the return side so usually the worst case is they have a little harder time returning oil to the tank thru the TC filter. This can cause breathing issues, especially on bottom breather engines causing excessive blow-by... sometimes. Top breathers are affected the same, just doesn't show up as easily.

 

Soooooo.....at the risk of devolving into an oil thread, I've just been buying the Wix filters for Evo softail. Would the TC variety work better because of the lower micron level?

 

Stick with the 51215 or 51214 and you'll be fine.

 

I have been using the TC filter on my Evo Softail for several years, because I wanted to cut down on different types of filters on the shelf. Never had a problem, and the factory says the filter can be used.
