Still the clutch

Default Still the clutch

Been having issues with clutch drag for a year now on 98 Ultra.
.
Took it all apart about 6 months ago. Miked plates... all within tolerances. All plates flat. Dial indicator showed adequate seperation on clutch pull, but replaced ***** in ramp with 10mm anyway to get that bit of extra travel.

. New clutch cable. Basket looked fine, rivets good. Throwout bearing replaced, no wear on clutch rod. Multiple clutch adjustments from just off slippage (1/8 turn) to 3/4 turn and everything in between.

. Primary fluid is ATF Type F. FSM says 2 3/4" from center of cluth hub to fluid level. Primary chain adjusted per FSM.

. When rolling to a stop in 1st gear , clutch will drag for a couple seconds when stopped with brake held and then release. When stopped in neutral and drop into 1st to go, clutch immediatly drags enough to drop rpm.

. Keep in mind it's a trike, so always straight up. Is my primary too full straight up? Should I try something different for primary fluid? New clutch plates? Thanks. Ken

Is that to the bottom of the diaphragm spring?

Don't know...never measured it with the cover off. Just goin' by the book.
Should do that tomorrow, as I'm down then for maintenance and a look-see at everything anyway. Will let you know. That would be an easy fix if just an overfill.

What works for me is to just dump a quart in and forget it.

no noise? have you checked the clutch hub bearing and smoothness in the clutch hub groves were the clutch plates ride? just a thought

Set the level of the primary lube so that it just touches the outer clutch shell, as in the illustration posted by THC.

Some service manuals call for too much lube in the primary, the level shown in the illustration is correct for all big twin wet clutches.

. Bearing is good, Mike. Hub grooves are all smooth. No noise, primary is very quiet. Trans, too.

. Plan to pull cover and measure from center of clutch hub to that point shown by THC, Dan. It is all pointing towards an overfill. Bet it's lower than FSM 2 3/4". Ken

Man seriously just dump in a quart and call it good!!!!!
This ain't rocket science all you have to do is put enough in there so the gears on the clutch hub can sling it around the inner primary.
The only thing in there that needs lubrication is the primary chain.
