Ran into same deal with my '89 last year. HD carries the switch for 93 and up. I used that one, wired it up and have had zero probs. It's close enough that you can make it happen.

I am chasing one of these 71549-82a switches, does anyone have an idea where I can get one. I am in Australia but I have plastic.

89FLHT, If I can't find the real thing, can I rely on the 93 switch to do the job and apart from the wiring is there any other modifications needed?

I hooked it up exactly like I did my original one. I did not have to change any wiring on my 89. It works fine.

Have you tried to take your switch apart andclean it. Lube it with electronics lube and you are back in business. I cannot vouch for your year butI have taken apart many motorcycle ign. switches due to them not working properly. Then they work perfect for a long time until they need another cleaning. Same with the handlebar switches.

89flht, gotta kick this dead horse topic because I'm getting conflicting info about putting the '93 ignition switch in my '91.

What exactly did you have to do to get it installed? You made it sound easy, so what did you do to make it work? Thanks

Since he no longer owns that bike I suspect he doesn't look in here much.
I suggest you send him a PM to ask him your question.
