86 Keihin Butterfly Carb question
#21
Thanks Everyone. I'm going to rebuilt carb, clean and replace all gaskets. It ran fantastic until Accelerator Pump diagram gave out. Maybe I didn't replace it right. lol Either way I'm going to give it a go. If I can not fix it, I will purchase new SS Carb. I owe it to the bike, myself and you all to give it a shot. Thanks for the help. I'll post back sometime this winter when I get all the fixens done and share how Carb turned out.
at risk of broken record syndrome... it is Not a Necessity.. ensure the Low speed jet is not plugged [there is about 5 Transfer ports] and the idle mixture screw is exposed!!! Finally know that the carb will Not function at all without a reasonable seal at that rubber plug over the pilot jet, in the bowl!!
Even tho I do Not worry at all about the acc pump... some folks require it and this

is about as good a write up as can be found... in general...

If it is an S&S manifold for the likes of an "E" it is larger than the manifold for the Stock Ka-sneeze.. generally not a great idea... Tho it may, in some instances, capture any intake reversionary wave... thus reducing stand-off.. Necessary??? I doubt it... ensure the interface between manifold and carb is Sealed..especially if the size is a mis-match!!

If this is not a heavily modded motor I would look the cv carb from a newer model. My sportster that I have is the factory cv requiring only a jet change for exhaust and air cleaner mods. They are available at a much lower price used online than the s&s. On my big twin the change from butterfly to cv made a huge difference for the performance and even a boost in fuel mileage.

Update ... Fixed
Wanted to share finally had opportunity to tinker on the bike. Added new exhaust and while at it I took lower part of carb off , removed jets , AC pump and put everything in my ultrasonic cleaner and put back together with new gaskets and everything is good to go. Thanks for your help!! Was able to require as well.. was able to take a little ride after Christmas

after doing many many CV conversations on shovelhead and early Evo, the best combo I've found is S&S intake with late model CV. Bear in mind that the flange on The intake and press flange on carb will set the carb out slightly, necessitating the need to use spacers on the mounting bracket.
