Default 2002 up swing arm width?

Hi,

I'm curious if anyone that has done the 2002 up touring swing arm upgrade on a 2001 down touring bike knows if swingarms are different widths?

Curious on account that if the axles are the same width, it seems like the adjusters and spacers would be all it'd take to keep the tapered bearing wheels. I like the timken tapered bearings in mine, and wouldn't mind keeping them and the wheels.

Thanks,

Zach

I put a 2004 swingarm on an 89 FLHS...I used a Custom Cycle Eng. kit and all I can say is that it was the one of the BEST upgrades I did on Ester. You will need a late rear wheel and brake also as the originals will not work with the newer swingarm.

I also have a later swingarm, 2007 IIRC. It fits right on the bike, except you will need an axle kit, I used a True-Track kit. Our older bikes use a smaller OD swingarm axle, so the bushings in the 'new' swingarm need to be replaced - my T-T kit came with new bushings and axle. Do not be tempted to try to open up the hole through your transmission casing.

The later swingarm won't take your old style rear caliper, also the later caliper won't work with your older style rear brake rotor, hence the need to replace wheel and caliper. If you want to keep your rear wheel you have some engineering/surgery to perform!

That makes sense.

What spawned the question was looking at a wilwood brake kit. They make a 4 piston setup that bolts right onto the old style lower legs, and an adapter to fit the 2000 up rear swingarm. https://www.wilwood.com/brakekits/Br...no=140-10173-P

The axle adjusters would be pretty easy to whip up at the machine shop, but if the axle its self got wider then that'd be a bit more work...

Cheers,

Zach
