96' Road King Cam upgrade with MM EFI
I currently have a compete stock '96 Road King with the Magnetti Marelli EFI. The bike just hit 70,000 and the only thing done to it as far as I know, is a top end and lifters at 48,000 miles. I bought it with 40,000 so I have no history before that.
I was thinking this winter it probably time to replace the cam bearing and having the Torrington installed. While I'm doing this I was thinking of going with an ev13 or ev27 cam.
I've heard if you have the MM EFI to just leave it alone. Mine has worked flawlessly with the exception of an engine light that popping up.
Two shops have suggested that I do a carburetor conversion and a second shop says they can keep the MM and install a Cobra Powrpro Black auto tuner.
Looking for advice on which route to take.
I do about 3-4000 miles a year on long trips and some bar hopping BTW.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

My personal thought would be to do the carb conversion and an Ev13 cam. I think you could pull tree stumps with that cam.
How ever many have used the EV27 with very satisfactory results. The 13 is a low end cam.
Part of the decision will be just how you'll be riding it..
I know little about MMefi but a good many here have it and still use it.
I _____ Nah I'll wait and let someone else tell ya about it.
Road King is a dang nice ride

If you are going to put a cam in your bike the stock ECM won't be able to handle it since it can't be tuned. You will need a different computer. That's a pretty good reason to dump EFI and go with a carb and cam.
If you are going to keep your EFI forget about the cam and then try and find out what's causing your bike to throw whatever fault codes you said it had.

I think, not for sure, that the SE3 cam was more or less an Andrews ev27. Bagger1997 had one with an FP3. Everything I said I gleaned from this board but this question comes up about once every three to four months....
I have a 1998 flhctui with the m&m and it seems to run fairly well with about 52000 miles.
OP, my friend may have his stage 2 cam and a/c that came on his 1998 rkc that was fuel injection. I will ask him. He has since gone to a carb then crazy. Lol

Everyone has pointed out correctly that the 95-96 ECM is not tunable but this Cobra auto tuner says it is compatable with the 95-96 ECM. News to me so I am wondering if anyone has experience with this or should I shell out a bit more for the carburetor conversion?

I guess it depends on how much the Cobra tuner costs and how much your willing to throw away "IF" it doesn't work out.. I've made plenty of upgrades that I just simply superseded till I was happy with what I have. Sometimes it's trial and error...
Update:... I just googled it and didn't see any info about the years and compatibility but for a phone call and a couple of hundred I guess it would be worth the effort to try it... I would...

I've got a '96 MM EFI Road King. I dropped an EV-13 cam in it and love it. It works fine for me, low end torque and plenty of power.
The stock ECM cannot be flashed to accommodate the changes. You will need to run an add on tuning box. I'm using an old Doebeck TFI tuner that does a great job. Tune it like a carb sort of thing.
I've read S&S has an ECM replacement that is tunable and much more user friendly, I just haven't forked over the money to get one.
I like my set up, runs strong all day long.
