Floating brake rotors or not?

rotors
That's one of the benefits, most are drilled and /or slotted too with aluminum carriers making them lighter. Less unsprung weight is always a good thing. I use EBC floaters with their most aggressive pads and PM 6 piston calipers. I found the stock brakes ( 88 FLHS ) more like a suggestion to stop. I sometimes ride pretty hard in the twisties and good stopping power is mandatory, especially if you did a bunch to make it go faster.

I suspect it has something to do with that stick looking thingy that hangs out in front of the throttle but I keep forgetting to try it and see if that's what it does...

Full floaters, for sure. If you live on the plains and rarely tackle mountains, your brakes may never get to do a lot of work. Living in the UK and with access to the Alps then the rules change! Going downhill for what seems like countless miles, negotiating endless tight hairpins the brakes, hands and wrists all get a major workout, sometimes requiring a rest partway down. In those circumstances, aftermarket rotors, pads and braided hoses are a must IMHO. I currently have EBC rotors and pads front and rear, although they haven't done much work yet.

Rotors
I've had floater from southern motorcycle works that were aluminum centers with steel rivets and the aluminum wore at the Roberts causing the brake rotor to be very loose and unusable. Doubt I even had 10k on them. I would not recommend floaters with aluminum centers..
