Default '90 Ultra: Cruise only works during warmup period?

RE: 1990 FLHTCU

I am hoping someone will read the following symptom and save me so troubleshooting work:

First ride of the day, within the first 15 minutes, 5 -10 miles etc. the cruise will work fine on our Ultra, everything works OK,
resume after waiting at a red light , everything just as it should do, and has been doing for a couple years and over 20,000 miles.

However, once running a while it drops out and then will not reset, or resume or anything - the light on the switch comes on when I flip the switch but thats it....until the next days ride. If I let it sit for several hours it will still not work, but overnight whatever is not right goes back to normal. Prior to this the cruise has always worked OK.

The only thing I changed since the last time I know for sure the cruise worked was the oil hose from the oil filter to the oil pump, and I installed a Crank Vent in the breather line going to the carb. However, I can't be 100% sure on when it stopped working because there are many times when I don't use it at all - some times not for a week or two.

thanks in advance,

joe

Your best bet is to buy the FSM. It has an extensive troubleshooting section for the cruise control.

Ditto the FSM. And check all the wiring.

However, it sounds like the stepper motor (computer) is overheating...Which most likely means you will need to find a replacement. Eighteen year old bike....You 'might' be able to still get one from the stealers. It'll probably run around $400. Check eBay for a used one.

Thanks, I have the FSM, just was hoping it was a very common symptom that would not require much effort.

If it is a stepper motor, does a one off a newer model work?

I sorta doubt if a newer stepper motor will work. Especially off a EFI bike, as they possibly get the speed information from a different source. I'd wager that on your bike, it gets the speed info from the reed switch which is on the speedometer. My 93 does. The EFI bikes and those with electronic speedo's probably get an entirely different signal. Not to mention that the wiring harness plug is most likely different.

Here's a couple eBay listings:

This for a 1991 stepper motor

This for a 1993-94 stepper motor (don't believe the lister, look at the part #-I've got the same one in my 93)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HARLE...QQcmdZViewItem

This is one for a 2004-2006:

I'd image that the first one is probably closer to what you've got that either of the others.

Thanks, I read the '90 was the only year the servo motor cable connected directly to the carb, so if i go anything newer I need to replace the carb, which is something I wanted to do. S&S has carb kits for '92 and up, so I guess that is where they change the setup. However, I didn't even get around to looking at it, given the choice between riding and working on it, I choose riding every time.
