Re-sealing my gas tank
#11
Update so far. I’ve used the POR15 stripper that was included in the kit I purchased twice. First time I used some ball bearings inside to try and losses the sealer. It worked ok but I can see a lot of sealer still inside the tank thru the few openings I can look thru. So the second time I used the stripper I put in nuts and got a lot more sealer out but still have sealer in the tank. So far I haven’t messed up the paint but it was close! Now I’m thinking of using acetone for my third time or just say to heck with it and run it like it is! Any thoughts on acetone being any better then the POR15 stripper?

Well to heck with it! I’ve tried the acetone and the POR15 stripper and no mater how well I think I’ve covered the paint and thought I had all openings sealed up tight, I always had seepage and the paint effected before I could get it wiped off. Lucky it didn’t remove the paint but I can see where it was starting too. I did get some of the sealer out but I would say only about 50%. I’m not taking anymore chances and will just have to check the petcock filter more often.

On a 2003 FXDL a family member has the liner is falling off inside the fuel tank.
We have removed as much as we could and now just check the petcock screen if the bike starts acting up.
That stinking sealer is a PITA when it starts peeling.
I am with Omaha on this, I would not seal it unless it is leaking and you don't want to weld up the leak.
As suggested, keep the tank filled as much as possible or is convenient for you.
