Stupid Question. Can you repack stock mufflers?
Sorry for the stupid n00b question guys. Through a weird set of circumstances I own my first ever Harley (1997 Dyna Wide Glide), and I am muddling through fairly successfully so far.
I have a LOT of questions, but the one I can't seem to find an answer to through the factory service manual, google or searching HDForums is can you repack the stock mufflers?
The bike is REALLY loud, and although I appreciate the nature of the sound I'd like to tone it down a bit. I did check the business end of the mufflers, and it seems there is a baffle in there not just straight pipes. However, the manual doesn't outline any procedure for removing the baffle, and searching only returns results for aftermarket pipes.
TIA!

Even if they are stock I doubt if it is possible to repack them. Not many brands have removable internals that let us repack them. If they are original they are over 20 years old now and may even have corroded and inside. Could be time for replacements!
The stock mufflers do have baffles and I doubt, if you hold one up, that you can see through it.

Remove the muffler to see what you really are dealing with. If they are original mufflers someone may have drilled them out or something.
The previous owner of my bike had completely removed the baffles from the stock exhausts. I ended up buying a set of lollipop style baffles from big city thunder and installed them at the end of the head pipes where they meet the mufflers. That did the trick in removing the harshness of the exhaust note and restoring my low end torque.

shine a light into the opening too an see what's there...take a pic of them, of the inside an get a part number. I don't know much about the dyna models but with the softails the mufflers/exhaust swap from the newer bikes to the evo's for a large year range. You might be able to find some cheap later stock take offs on craigslist.
