Default 89 evo electra glide rear fender question

Good day people, firstly may I wish all of you across the pond a very good new year.
I love my all original bike, but :-
So why did/do HD put vents ( louvres) in the front of the rear fender( its a mudguard in Queens English). Is it so that they are more likely to crack like mine has ?
It seems to me that its better to retain the muck in the mudguard than throw it through the vents all over the swingarm, or is there some reason for this that I am unaware of?
many thanks for your thoughts.

Wink

Hello old chap and commiserations, plus best wishes of the season. The vented part of my 1990 Glide's mudguard also cracked and I disposed of it long ago (bike owned from new). I replaced it with a large mudflap which I trimmed to fit, to keep out the worst of the muck thrown up by the rear tyre. So that's my suggestion. I haven't detected any problems as a result and have been riding with it for many years now.

I blame it on the new 'improved' translation software we depend on - makes communicating across 'the pond' easier in some ways, but even makes us chuckle sometimes!

So true! We visited Australia last year - that's another story!
