Default 1998 FXDWG - A few questions, 1 thread.

Having already posted a thread about wheels and knowing I will have a few more questions about my soon to arrive FXDWG I though rather than clutter up the board I will try and keep them all in one place. Its winter here and I live in the mountains so no riding until March but I want to start collecting parts and be ready.

Its a completely stock bike with 5K original miles and the plan is to tidy it up into a nice reliable good looking bike.

Im after a look similar to the one below but with small apes rather than western bars and a fraction less chrome and less HD logos etc. Just simple clean look.

1st up. Rear shocks. Have been offered some 10" shocks but am worried that they will be too low resulting in interference with belt on primary or similar? What length are the stock ones, I seem to recall 13"?

Thanks in advance for all or any help.
Cheers
Pete

10.5 rear shocks, lower front 2 inches and get that seat and you will be there.

I think the stock rear shock was 12.5 inches. If you go down to those 10 inch shocks you might want to redo the tail lamp wiring which is under the rear fender so the tire won’t rub any of it. I don’t think the belt will hit anything

That seat is a shity ride, as for the rear shocks there's lowering blocks on a rear, which aren't recommended by a lot because of breakage. A different swingarm might do the trick a little better and for the tank that's also been lowered you got to watch the clearance on the air cleaner you might have to get a different backing plate to lower the air cleaner a little bit.. remember that when lowering a bike it really decreases your clearance and cornering ability not to mention the change in trail...

That bike looks nice stock as is, I'd leave just like that. maybe add a set of slip ons. But that's only my opinion...

Nice looking bike. Well done finding it!

Personally, I'd do the seat and bars first. Those two things are going to make a much bigger difference in how it feels than will the shocks. Get those two things sorted, then see what's next from there.

The stock rear shocks suck. I replaced mine (96 FXDWG) with a set of Foxx that lowered the rear 1 inch. Replaced the fork springs with a set of White Bros. progressives that lowered the front 1.75 inches. Handling improved a lot as the bike didn't hop as bad. That said, I agree with a previous poster and would leave it as it is. Don't see many low mileage, clean Evo Wide Glides these days, jmo. Nice find, best of luck to you.

I agree, but then again, I like the stock look, but respect a persons desire to customize. YD

My bad on the shocks. There are no lowering blocks probably went to a10.5 or 11" shock... I do like the look of what you want to do though... Looks pretty sleek.

Nice bike for sure.
The ars you’re looking for look very similar to Carlini slickbacks. Tbey’re only 7” high. Like the look of the seat, ut probably not good for all day.
Keep us posted. Wanna see where it ends.
