So after fixing the the tab on the speedo drive I decide to hook up the speedo and give it a try. Lo and behold the drive works, the cable works, the speedo works and the signals self cancel again. All is right with the word!

But, I know something caused the tab to twist out of the slot and I figure that sooner or later I'll find out what that was; somewhere down the line.

I'm glad you got it fixed.

 

That could be down to clumsy handling by a PO, the tab is not very robust. Now you have it straight and are aware of it, I'm sure all will be well in the future. Well done for sorting it out!

 

The PO was me in my case. I reinstalled the front wheel and missed getting the tab correctly in it's slot. Went out for a short ride all was good, next morning on a longer ride(bout a 100mi in) speedo quit.

I had to get a drive unit, the tab broke trying to straighten out.

I once resurrected a drive unit with a sheet metal screw.
