novice Clutch cable question
So I have an 89 FXSTC with about 56000 miles. I have adjusted the clutch cable as much as I can. Now while it still works, I'm back to having to pull the clutch lever almost all the way to the grip. So my question is this:
1. Is it just time for a new clutch cable?
2. Is there an underlying clutch issue I should have checked out?

Ditto...
Get a FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. Yes it is something you should learn and be able to do yourself (Pretty simple), as well as most other maintenance items.

Time to readjust your clutch.
Step one is loosen the cable all the way up.
Step two is remove derby cover and loosen lock nut on clutch hub.
Step three is spin clutch adjuster all the way in then back off 1/2 turn.
Step four is tighten lock nut on clutch adjuster (you have to hold the adjuster with an allen wrench while you do this) and replace derby cover.
Step five is to adjust clutch cable til you only have 1/8th in play at lever then tighten cable lock nut.
All that is in your manual although it might be hard to understand as the manual was written for mechanics that were familiar with Harleys and not your average Joe.
Have you had the right side cover of the tranny off recently for any reason?
