novice Clutch cable question

That rules out a possible problem.

Let us know what happens after you do the whole clutch adjustment.
Adjusting the cable alone won't do you any good.

Take the right side cover off and check the bearing race that the clutch actuactor presses against as what your describing is also the symptom of the bearing race failing or wearing out. When it goes; you would swear the clutch cable has broken as the clutch lever can now pretty much touch the bars before it functions.
The small bearing frequently fails.
