Default '89 FLHS fork springs....

Hi guys, my right fork seal stopped doing its job and let the fork oil out of captivity. For all I know, the springs in there are the originals and the ride would surely benefit some new, less bouncy suspension components.

I was going over the options available, and was wondering if any of you had installed this and what were your thoughts... I also plan do do the install myself after the season's over, although it will be a first for me, any tips will be welcome.

Oh....and will I need any special tools to get through this???

Thanks!

Thumbs up

Your bike originally had air assisted forks, so if that has been removed it will explain why you find them bouncy. Air functions as a spring in it's own right and can be used to stiffen the ride. However there is no doubt that using a modern replacement should give you a significant improvement in ride quality. I have Ohlins fork cartridges in my 1990 FLHS, so can't comment on the Progressives, but they are most certainly worth a try.

Yes the anti-dive works, but I still find them way soft. I'm pretty much set on getting the Progressives, but still a bit wary of the instal....never done that before.

I put the Progressive Monotube in my 89 Ultra. Like GRBROWN mentioned and you know there is air assist/anti-dive - which I eliminated. BIke handle so much better. New springs and oil will help but the cartridges are the way to go.

Did you install them yourself? If so, anything I should know before trying it?

I recommend you dismantle your forks, you'll be shocked at the muck inside them! Also replace the bushings and seals, that way you'll have an entirely fresh set of forks, along with your cartridges. Amy will show you how to strip and rebuild them, (scroll down) which along with your FSM and installation instructions should get you through!

Yes I did them myself. Removing everything to pull the fork is a pain, but you have to do the same for seals and bushing.
The hardest, messiest part is getting the oil in. Be patient and go slow, follow all instructions, as well as those in the FSM.
