Default Harley Clutch?

What is the purpose of the spring plate in the Harley clutch pack?
I had the primary off my bike so I thought I would go ahead and put in a new clutch, I have had the bike for 4 years, it had 72000 miles on it when I bought it and now has 92000. The new clutch set had 8 fibers and 6 steels, and instructions say to reuse the spring plate, the thing is, the clutch pack I took out does not have a spring plate, it has 9 fibers and 7 steels. So the po changed out the clutch plate and did away with the spring plate. does the spring plate do and what would leaving it out do?
My clutch work fine without it.

To the best of my knowledge it gentles the transition of clutch engaged to clutch released.

The spring plate in my original clutch grenaded throwing chunks in brass rivets all through the basket. I replaced it. With the screaming eagle heavy duty clutch which does not use the spring plate. Much less "friction zone" with out it.

I would take one best steel and fiber plates from the old clutch and install. The spring plate has given many people problems when they come apart.
