Not absolutely necessary but just made me feel better about clearance.

That gasket came off in pieces. I was actually wondering if I should use the new gasket when measuring once I get to that point.

About to head to the machine shop.

I realized I skipped something I should've done. Mark the pinion and breather gears before I removed the old cam.

Obviously swapping cam gears won't be a problem since they're marked from the factory, but I'm wondering how I'll line the new cam up correctly. I found the breather gear's mark but I don't see a mark on the pinion anywhere, even though the manual says it should be marked. Wondering if I should remove the nut and see if the marking is under it?

Yes. Use the new gasket.

Yep. It's there. Depending on how the nut landed back when it was torqued down, the mark may be partially obscured by one of the nuts points, but it's there.

When I installed my new EV27 cam, the instructions that came with it said that the gear was good for 90% of the engines, so I used the new gear rather than pressing off the old one and putting the new one back on, and I did not have any whine. I went with new lifters, rockers, rocker shafts and push rods and it was so much quieter that I would have notice it if it was whining.

The clearance range is so big I wouldn't sweat it.

Mine whined like a **** so now I only ever use the original gear.

Yes and allow 5 thou for gasket compression.
