Question Butterfly carb choke spring

Hi guys, anyone know where I can find the springs that keep the choke open?

I was able to order everything I need to ovehaul the carb, except for the choke spring...can't seem to find them anywhere!

Carb is a butterfly Keihin on my '89 Evo.

Seriously, that carburetor isn`t worth the price of a rebuild kit.

The spring on the choke shaft isn`t even listed as an available part in the `89 parts manual...

If you remove the screws holding that choke butterfly to the choke shaft, make sure you clean them and locktite the threads when you install, if you don`t...

I guarantee they will come out...

Do you have some reason to still be using that low performance carb?

Main reason is it's been running well with it and the CV's are very pricey.

Hey bowhunter -- your carb is worth more the a repair kit , it's just that some people don't know how to rebuild a carb as the reason that carb got a bad name was the ones trying to rebuild them never removed the small o-ring under the idle mixture screw and it was all dried up and split and sucked air then they cursed the carb when all along it was them not doing a good job
Two places
PJ Motorsports.com ---- for vintage parts
JetsRus.com

If you want to put a sweet up grade on that carb for about $40 go to J&P cycles and get a adjustable main get and a High Flow fuel pump , they are a great set up I have them on 2 of my bikes

That carb is a Japanese H-D used from appox mid '70's to apox 1990 a Jap racing carb so if you have a hard time finding that spring you might try a Jap dealer or used dealer
Oh on the O-ring under the idle screw --- take a small paper clip open it up at 1 end bend to 90deg cut off to about 1/8" reach down in hole and fish out a O-ring and a washer that was probably giving you some problem anyway -- put a little light grease on that new O-ring

I have a few bikes that are all stock and I'm running these carbs. The spring you are talking about seems to break on all of them. I take a piece of wire and bend up a little double hook type thing for them. It is loose enough that it allows the choke to move, but it also 'locks' it to the cam so it it stays open without the spring.

Mrlexus, I like the idea of à fix without the spring but I can't picture it. Where does that wire hook up???? How can it let the choke work correctly with no spring?

A thunderjet also helps the mid range. But, you will either need to cut a slot in the choke plate, or remove it completely.

I never had a problem starting mine when cold without the choke plate. 2 or 3 good squirts of the accelerator pump by twisting the throttle and she always starts. I then use the thumb screw to keep the idle up a little. YD

I have the original carb from my 85 FXWG (I'm original owner), in good running condition. I did a top end rebuild a few years ago, although the bike was still running very good. Just wanted more power. Among other things, I replaced the carb.

PM me if your interested in the old carb.

If you look at this picture you will see the round black **** on the choke cam. Loop around that, then go straight down and under the gold arm connected to the choke butterfly. You will need the loops 90 degrees from each other, and allow enough play so it doesn't bind up. This will basically keep the cam in contact with the choke arm and eliminate the need for the spring.
