Default Gas Cap Removal WTF!!

I can't get my left gas tank cap off on my 94' Fatboy. It just ratchets, tried grabbing it with a big pair of channel locks but it still ratchets before loosening. Any ideas? Mike

Isn't the left side right handed threads. Spin it the other way.

the diagram for your '94 shows a different gas cap for each side ... and you say it ratchets ... my gas caps ratchet when tightening ... could the left cap be left hand thread and you have to turn it the other way to remove it ... I'm not sure, just asking

Yep, my '96 Heritage left tank cap is "backwards" as well.

My buddy, who I bought it from, neglected to pass along that little nugget of information when I got it last spring. On the 160 mile ride home I stopped at a gas station to fill up and it took me a while to figure it out.

Left hand cap had been a left hand thread since before Uncle G. Was a gleam in his daddy's eye. This is because the vent is in the right cap (the high point when the bike is on the kick or "jiffy" stand). The caps are threaded differently so the can't be mixed up.

Thanks!! I was just about to take a die grinder to it! The last bike I had with two gas caps was back in 1980, and ya know I don't remember which way the left one came off. I am going to chock it up to senior moment haha. Tonight I moved onto wiring, its a real mess behind the gas tanks, gotta be two or three rolls of electrical tape in there. Later. Mike

Look at the bright side,it least its not hacked to death like mine is. I'll have to replace the whole interconnect if not all the wiring on mine eventually.

If and when you feel the need to do that look out for the latest hi-tech wiring kits. They come with an electronic junction box which provides flasher unit etc and greatly simplify rewiring. I have a UK HDF chum who has done his Evo Glide with great success.
