Default 97-99 Fatboy rear fender cutout

Trying to buy replacement tins to do a repaint on my 1997 Fatboy.

Found a good deal on a tank and front fender. But the 97-99 rear fenders are different from the 90-96 and harder to find.

It looks like the only difference is the fusebox cutout. Anyone know if I could buy a 90-96 rear fender and just cut out where the fusebox mounts?

You probably could, but in my experience, the '86-'96 rear fender isn't real easy to find anymore, either.

I might have found three piece paint set for cheap. I am trying to find out if it is for a 1997 or a 2007.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/302174216553

I sent the seller a question about it. I will let you know what he says.

I also found this.

And in Surdyke I found this.

https://www.surdyke.com/PartsMain.as...,%20PRIMED-KIT

And I found that part number using this

They actually made that change mid-year in 96...but virtually all catalogs show the change between 96-97 like you said.

I painted a 96 softail for a friend...and bought the 96 tins and painted them with out even checking...

went to change them out and saw the fusebox...taped up the area with blue painters tape...cut it out with a cut-off wheel on a die grinder...painted the cut edge with a brush...worked fine.

I just got a reply. The seller apologized for the mistake and is correcting the listing. It's for a 2007 and newer.

Appreciate the effort. I'd seen that one in my searching, but I could tell from looking at it that something wasn't right.

Well, this is good to know and answers my question. Thank-you.

I'm thinking if I don't locate a used 90-99 fender, I may just buy a new aftermarket 90-96 one (no one seems to manufacture 97-99 rear fenders) like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raw-Steel-Re...VXLCmZ&vxp=mtr.

At least I won't have to sand it.

Did you see the black one I found on eBay? The new one I found on Surdyke's website is primed.

Yep, I've had that one in my eBay watch list for a little while. Just not sure about the two dents in it. If it was cheaper I might go for it, but I'm not sure how well I could repair it, not having any experience with doing that.

I didn't even know you could order older OEM parts new like that. Thanks for those links.

Do you think there's a big quality difference between a genuine HD fender and a Drag Specialties/Bikers Choice type aftermarket fender? They're about $200 difference in price.

If I bought aftermarket for the rear, I'd be at about $350 total for tank and fenders. I should be able to sell my existing tins for at least that much. But if I spend much more than that, it might make sense to just keep my fenders and just sell my tank. Decisions, decisions!
