Did you buy an Evo motor? A pic should help. The location of your oil filter is normally in front of your front cylinder. For older model FLs, the oil filter is located under the frame toward rear of the bike.

I wouldn't start taping that case, because there's no need. You may just be missing the oil filter mount and oil lines.

If the pic is on your computer you just have to click on manage attachments then brown for the pic then add it. The pic is key to give direction. I;m pretty sure as far as softtails go the oil filter is mounted off the front of the engine, perhaps the seller didnt send you the oil filter mount.

Earley evos had no holes in the case for the oil filter mount...and really not enough "meat" in the area to tap the holes. On softails the filter was mounted to the left forward control, and the filter was roughly in the same place as the newer models...this is from an 86. Obsolete from harley but v-twin makes a reproduction.

EDIT: a few years had the boss for the oil filter mount cast into the cases but not drilled...these are OK to drill and tap.

Your '94 would be a top breather, the engine without the oil filter mount would probably be a bottom breather, if there's the fitting #33, it's a '92 or older and bottom breather.
Look at the heads where the air cleaner bolts to, you'll see inserts reducing the thread and takes a 5/16" bolt, the '94 would not have the inserts and use larger breathers bolts.
The engine should still fit, but a different breather setup.

Default Additional advice...

I realize I’m late to the party and read through the recommendations thus far, but I was curious if anyone had a diagram for plumbing an 87 1340 Evo up (no filter, adding external) so I make sure I’m not screwing anything up? Original motor was blown, purchased bike with no connections made, so I’m running from scratch. Side note: what’s the best type of hose/fittings to use for the high temps they carry? Thanks in advance!!!
