1988 Sportster EVO
Hey everyone, quick question. I'm gonna look at a 88' EVO Sportster and sidecar next week. From pics it looks in great condition. It has 24,000 miles, new tires, nice matching paint.Does anyone know if this is a 4 or 5 speed. He is asking $6,000.Any coments would be welcome.I would use this for local rides and around town for me and wife. Thanks for any info. It's a 4 speed from the factory. 6k with the sidecar? I think it may be pretty under powered.
I think the novelty of a side car would be cool, but again, not much power.
You can get a newer sporty with less miles, a 5 speed, with a better carb for around 3k. Then you have $$ room to find a sidecar for it. YD

The thing to be aware of with 4 speed Sporties is the alternator is in the back of the clutch drum and the magnets often come loose as the clutch splines wear and the whole thing wobbles which causes the magnets to hit the stator.
The cure is an encapsulated rotor/hub, and turn down the stator frame by a couple of millimetres. It will last for ages then...do the mainshaft output bearing while you are in there.
Stock they can give trouble from as little as 30K miles.
