Hey everyone, quick question. It's a 4 speed from the factory. 6k with the sidecar? I think it may be pretty under powered.

I think the novelty of a side car would be cool, but again, not much power.

You can get a newer sporty with less miles, a 5 speed, with a better carb for around 3k. Then you have $$ room to find a sidecar for it. YD

Seems a bit high to me as well. Dunno what side cars sell for, though.

Don't discount a 4 speed. It's plenty. Dr.Linda is right there with me at 90 MPH on her Sportster.

There are lots of Sporty sidecars around, so I doubt if their owners are unhappy or disappointed! As with any outfit, it is normal to reduce gearing, to help compensate for the extra weight and drag. Just goggle 'sportster sidecar' and stand back! Stacks of 'em.

The thing to be aware of with 4 speed Sporties is the alternator is in the back of the clutch drum and the magnets often come loose as the clutch splines wear and the whole thing wobbles which causes the magnets to hit the stator.

The cure is an encapsulated rotor/hub, and turn down the stator frame by a couple of millimetres. It will last for ages then...do the mainshaft output bearing while you are in there.

Stock they can give trouble from as little as 30K miles.
