Default Belt squeal anyone??

I've got a 96 Springer with about 33k miles, bought last fall. Bike had been neglected on regular maintenance for quite some time. Just recently I've developed belt squeal, I've adjusted the axel in and out of alignment, washed the belt and the rear sprocket, played with the belt tension. I got the squeal narrowed down to coming from the inner sprocket on the main shaft. Any body ever have this problem? Also the rubber on the inside of the belt is pretty much all peeled off, and I'm assuming that's what I cleaned off the rear sprocket, and it's down to showing allot of fibers, is that normal? Looking for ideas from the veterans, I'm fairly confident in my wrenching and have the service manual. Thanks fellas.

You mention that rubber is peeled off, which is just a wee bit alarming! Do you mean some of the teeth?!

gr- just a thin layer of rubber looking material has peeled off on the inside and showing some fibers. All the teeth are still there.

I think I'm going to have to pull the primary and take look behind it.

Time to replace ther rear belt for sure. last thing you need is to be at speed and have it shred on you. Belts usually last a very long time.

I'll ask a question just so the OP won't wish he'd asked. Since belt has obviously been running way out of adjustment, is there a need to replace the pulleys when he replaces the belt? My chain drive days makes me wonder since everything really needs to fit perfect to work well.

Absolutely check pulleys for wear and mostly "flaking of any coating/chrome" as this will contaminate the new belt. Replace belt and or pulleys.

Thanks for the replies guys. I ordered a new belt today along with an inner primary rebuild kit, seals, couple bearings, and a new gasket. Maybe I can figure out how to get a pic on here when I'm done and show off the bike I was working on.
