Default 5 speed transmission case question

I know there is a transmission forum, posting here cuz there's more traffic.

Working on a build, planning to use a 90's trans/primary/clutch/etc.

Which 5 speed tranny case do the gurus here recommend, other than stock of course? This is in case I can't find something acceptable that's stock HD

No plans at this time to going to a 6 speed, but the option would be nice. I would also like to not have to use a specialized gear set, if there is such a thing.

Delkron? S&S? Jim's?

If I had to have a new case Baker is the one I would use if I couldn't get a stock one.

Nothing wrong with the stock tranny case. What you should do is slap in a 2001 and later trap door, shift drum, and shift pawl.

Sounds interesting. Can you elaborate on what the benefits/improvements would be?

You mean the Twin Cam parts are superior to the Evo ones? ;-)

Bigger trap door bearings, no anemic shift pawl spring to break and chew up 5th gear, and the shift drum has a straight cut "gear" instead of this wavey teeth crap on the older 5 speed stuff. This keeps you from getting that loosey gooseyness of the shifter when you put it into 1st. On 01 and later shift drum/pawl/pawl spring once you pop it into 1st that's it.. shifter has no play in it. Cuts down dramatically on the false neutrals and crap like that. To be honest with you, the old 5 speed components are JUNK.

Yeah, sometimes. They both have their advantages and disadvantages over each other, but it won't stop me from poking you twinkie riders in the ribs now... it's fun.

Thanks! Good info. If I ever have to go into the trans on my '96 Dyna, that sounds like a good upgrade.

1999 and later trap door will use the larger outside diameter trap door bearings, P/N: 8992A.

There was no change to the inside diameter of the bearing, so it can be retrofitted to any year 5 speed.
