New to Harley, went to the dealer for an oil filter for my newly acquired FXR 3
. I asked about a evo specific oil filter and got a blank stare. I was handed this filter confidently part number 63798-99A.
I however am not confident that I have the correct one!
Is it true that the evo has a unique part number?
Was I given the correct part?
If not, what part number should I ask for?

Ahh, the great oil filter debate. I run Toyota oil filters only on my bikes.

 

The part number for an EVO chrome filter is 63796-77A.

 

You will be OK. Evos can run oil T/C oil filters.

He's asking if the dealership gave him the right filter.

 

That's part of the debate, Mike. "Oh, no, it has to be a -77 or it will grenade your motor fer sure..." or fill it up with oil or make your tires run low or something. Then there's the "I've run that twinkie filter since the twinkie came out." Anyway, I'm pushing 100K miles on my bike and I've had a HD filter on it for <10K of those, and Toyota filters or the Wix equivalent for the last 50K.

So, run the twinkie filter, it will be just fine.

 

Guess I better exchange for the 63796-77A, hope they have it!

 

Yes Doc I'm familiar with the debate but how I took it was the parts guy was too stupid to look up the right part number for his bike.
I'm in complete agreement with you about run what filter you want but I draw the line at when asking a parts guy for an EVO (not EVO compatible) filter and he gives you a blank stare and then hands you a twinkie filter.

Will the Twinkie filter work??? Yes it will but that's not what the OP asked for from the parts guy.

If the OP wants to run a Harley EVO filter and not just a compatible one that will work just fine that's his choice.

I guess my biggest problem with the whole thing is the parts guy unable to give the OP the part he asked for.
I mean what's he gonna get if he goes in and asks for a rocker box gasket???

WIX makes the HD filters. If your dealer won't sell you a 77A, order a wix online.
