Default Time for a new Stator

Have to replace the stator in my 1990FLHS. Any that would be "best quality"; Cycle Electric, OEM, ACCel, Spyke, Compu-Fire? Not interested in upgrading to 3 phase and 32 amp is plenty.

Thanks.

Conventional wisdom around here is that either CE or OEM are best.

That said, I've got a couple of years on my Accel (stator and VR) without complaint.

I've replaced 3 OEM's in 12 years, now it has a CE unit. I've never heard anyone say they've had a failure. I got tired of replacing them, the CE unit is much more well made - I'm ready to pay for the quality. Last one didn't last 4 years of mn riding.

As others here suggested, I just put in a CE stator (32amp) yesterday. Letting the loctite cure and will be finishing up the job today. They have a two year warranty. The brands you listed are all good companies, and I don't think you would go wrong. Just stay away from Chinese made stator, and you will be good. Last Chinese stator I had lasted 16K miles.

New stator:

Be sure to put loctite on the bolts. They come with dried loctite on them, but I don't trust it. This is what happens (two stators ago) when you trust pre-applied loctite.

daven9113,

Did you use blue loctite on the stator bolts?

I believe CE recommends purple loctite (222) on the bolts that hold the plug retainer.

Thanks.

I used blue loctite. And I also used loctite on the little screws that go into the engine case holding the plastic piece. The CE stator does come with brownish dried loctite on their bolts, but I don't trust how long that's been sitting on the shelf.

The most important thing here is to make sure the Rotor is properly shimmed out from the Stator. I have seen where the windings on the stator have rubbed on the inside of the Rotor....
